As millions of dollars and tens of billions of Leones continue to pour in from the international and local communities for last month’s landslide and flood victims, many concerned citizens have pleaded with the government not to allow these donations to end up like the Ebola funds for which certain people were found culpable of fraudulently converting huge sums of money into private benefit and got away scot-free.
Skeptical citizens mention many instances when government officials have with impunity misused tax payers and donor monies with Parliament, ACC, the Judiciary and the Executive doing nothing to punish those involved in order to deter others from daring to undertake similar ventures.
To buttress their assertion, the citizens’ point out that more than fifteen MDAs cannot justify how monies that were given to them by the Ministry of Finance have been used and are asking for more money.
The memories of the people are still fresh with instances, such as the huge sum of money that was wasted to supposedly purchase ferries that never served the people and the relocation of victims of the September 16th 2015 flood to Mile 6.
Reference is also made of road contractors who defrauded government and the people, the SABABU Education project which involved millions of dollars, and the Freetown Waste Management project for which some managers were fired for their fraudulent use of the World Bank Loan.
Accordingly, citizens who said they have lost confidence in the integrity and honesty of the government are calling on President Koroma who they see as the only person who can ensure transparent accountable use of the money not to sleep in his wing. What the people fear is that the government would start with construction of the houses intended for the victims and then somewhere along the line, the project grinds to a halt and the money disappears.
