Mercury International on Tuesday, 11th October, 2016, donated the sum of fifty million Leones to the Sierra Leone Cricket Association (SLCA) at its head office on Kroo Town Road.
The money is to help the SLCA organize the 2016/2017 T-20 competition. T-20 is a shortened form of the sport that is now popular worldwide.
Martin Michael, the Managing Director of Mercury International and also Vice Chairman of SLCA spoke of his special association with SLCA.
He stated that cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and that “our cricketers have brought laurels and dignity to the country”. He recognized the association for doing well over the years.
Mercury International, Martin Michael said, felt honoured and proud to sponsor SLCA's T-20 competition. Cricket, he added, is a gentlemanly, nice and decent sport.
On behalf of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Samir Hassaniyeh, management, staff and retailers, he wished the SLCA good luck in its endeavor whilst promising them continued support from Mercury International.
SLCA Chairman, Sydney Benka-Coker, thanked Mercury International very much. He said that sponsorship had almost eluded SLCA in hosting the T-20 competition. He disclosed that for a long time SLCA has not had any sponsorship. He thanked Mercury for its willingness and readiness to sponsor sports in the country, noting the company's contribution to the success of sports in Sierra Leone.
Sydney Benka-Coker said this is a way for Mercury to give back to the society through its corporate social responsibility.
The SLCA, he furthered, is now a viable association that stands on a good foundation of accountability. Mercury's sponsorship will enable SLCA make good team selection as it leads to winning whilst bad selection leads to losing.
